The "so'lung" of the Gaddang of Mountain Province and Eastern Cordillera

The "so'lung" of the Gaddang of Mountain Province and Eastern Cordillera.

"The men's hat (fallake, kinaw-it, cattagang, saklong, so'lung) is a common adornment among the Cordillera ethnolinguistic groups such as the Bontok, Kankanaey, and Kalinga. Made of bamboo or wood, it is often covered with fine woven rattan and embellished with small white, black, yellow, and red beads strung together. A pair of clam shell ornaments shaped like butterflies are also tied to the sides. The Gaddang so'lung serves aesthetic purposes but similar hats of the other groups have practical uses such as concealing betel, tobacco, or smoming pipes. (Abellera 1981, Maramba 1998, Vanoverbergh 1929)"
