Baguio City's Love Affair with Concrete

Baguio City seems to love pouring concrete over everything. This is the space in front of the Baguio City Justice Hall. The spaces around these trees used to be open soil which means they help in absorbing water runoff. There used to be grass, plants, and flowers here.

The trees remain but cement has been poured around them and too close to their trunks.

It's pretty ironic. Last October during the opening of the Baguio Arboretum Park, the mayor called for more green spaces and more efforts to protect the environment.

Covering everything with concrete is detrimental to the environment because it LESSENS green spaces and it adds to the city's drainage and flooding problems.
