Luzon King Cobra Spotted in Bagnen, Bauko, Mountain Province

This is a Luzon king cobra (Ophiophagus salvatana) that was recently spotted in a ricefield in Bagnen, Bauko, Mountain Province. This species is highly venomous because of the large volume of venom it can inject in a single bite.

The cobra was seen during a rapid assessment of a tourism site there by the Bauko Tourism Office, MENRO, MDRRMO, and barangay personnel. They saw the snake at a ricefield but it moved to the creek when the group passed by.

Here's what's very interesting about this snake. It was described and officially recognized as a new species only last year (2024). The scientists who studied it published their research work in October of last year in the European Journal of Taxonomy. This species is endemic in Luzon. This means it can only be found here.

King cobras are apex predators. True to their name, their diet is composed primarily of other snakes. That's why they are sometimes called "snake-eaters".
