Yellow-Vented Bulbul (Pyconotus goiavier) Spotted in Tawang, La Trinidad, Benguet

Today's visitor outside the house in La Trinidad, Benguet is a Yellow-Vented Bulbul (Pyconotus goiavier). This is a passerine bird that's native in Southeast Asia. It got its name from the bright yellow vent under its tail. Another distinctive feature of this bird is the thick black line between the bill and the eye.

These are tough and adaptable birds even in human-impacted environments. Which is why they are common in urban environments and heavily-populated places like La Trinidad.

Filipino words for this bird include purak, purak-purak, luklak, pirok-pirok, and culcul.

*Note: The word "bulbul" here is derived from the Persian word for nightingale.
