Igorot Women, Children, and Babies at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909

This was a souvenir postcard showing Igorot women, children, and babies at the Alaska - Yukon - Pacific Exposition (AYPE) which was held at Seattle, Washington, United States in 1909. Like in previous fairs and expositions where Igorots were brought to be exhibited as attractions, Igorots built traditional dwellings at the fair grounds. They were instructed to show American audiences their ways of life back in the Philippines like dancing, preparing meals, tribal fighting, and weaving textiles.

As you can see in the photo, some of the women had babies. Apparently, according to historical accounts, some of them gave birth during the run of the exposition. The exposition opened in June 1, 1909 and ended in October 16, 1909.

An estimated 3,700,000 people visited the exposition during its run.

The site of the exposition is now the present campus of the University of Washington.
