A two-year-old girl drowned after falling into an irrigation canal in barangay Calupaan in Alfonso Lista, Ifugao. The incident occurred in the morning of June 29 (Monday). The child's body was recovered the following day in a portion of the irrigation canal in barangay San Juan in the same town. The girl was identified as Queenie Rose Nuque.
According to Senior Police Officer 4 (SPO4) Cornelio Marawis of the Alfonso Lista police, the victim along with a cousin went to play at the edge of the irrigation canal. A few hours later, only the cousin went home. This prompted the victim's grandmother to seek the help of barangay officials and policemen. The search operation started between 3 and 4 in the afternoon. The search team was composed of Alfonso Lista policemen, personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection, barangay officials and volunteers.
The search continued through the night and into the following day. The victim was found around 8:30 in the morning of June 30. No signs of foul play were found in the victim's body.
In light of the incident, local officials and policemen are urging residents near the irrigation canal to watch over their children who play on the edge of the irrigation canal.
