"The fukas, fukhas, or bukas is a white bead traditionally made from the shells of the giant clam (Tridacna gigas). These beads are strung together with other smaller beads, such as small carnelians or glass beads. The resulting ensemble of beads, also called fukhas or bukas, is worn on the head exclusively by married women. Aside from having aesthetic purposes, the ensemble also serves practical purposes as a hair tie and secret storage for important objects such as keys. (Francis 1992; Maramba 1998; Vanoverbergh 1929)"
